FOLLOW THAT DREAM

FOLLOW THAT DREAM

(Collector's Label)

Bootleggers had been feeding Elvis collectors insatiable appetite for unheard Presley with vinyl import albums that in some cases were better than the official releases of that time. RCA finally dipped into their vaults of unissued product with the first volume of the "A Legendary Performer" series in 1974. Danish historian Ernst Jorgensen and England's RCA Elvis historian Roger Semon were given the task to re-establish Elvis as a serious artist and stem the tide of bootlegs by giving his fans high quality, unreleased material using live performances or studio outtakes.

The "Follow That Dream" (FTD Collector's catalogue had been established by RCA/BMG in July 1999 and began with the compact disc release of "Burbank '68".

COMPACT DISC:

FTD used the standard 5" flip case for many live on-tour performances. For the "Classic Album" and "Soundtrack Series" they adopted a 7" digipack gatefold book-style CD. Session CD's used an 8" digipack gatefold sleeve.

VINYL:

In 2009, to mark their tenth anniversary and recognising the current upturn in record sales, FTD began to revisit their Elvis catalogue, releasing Elvis' most famous albums on vinyl.

These LP's would be a high quality product released as a limited edition run, outsourced to Abbey Road Studios in London, who used Direct Metal Mastering (DMM). This technique engraved the audio directly onto a copper-coated steel master disc using an automated high-frequency vibrating diamond stylus. The audio itself would be prepared by various trusted RCA/Sony engineers. Vic Anesini (who remixed a lot of the outtakes), Anesini's source files were restored by Sebastian Jeansson & Lene Reidel. These DMM albums were pressed in the Czech Republic by GZ Media and then distributed throughout Europe by Sony Music International who were based in Denmark.

Sometime in 2015, FTD changed from using the DMM mastering method back to the traditional "warmer" engineer lacquer cuts.

In most cases these were mastered by Barry "Bazza", "The Wizard" Grint who would leave his mark etched in the run out of the album. He worked from London at Alchemy Mastering who were later acquired by Air Studios in 2020. The "Grint" albums were pressed in Germany by Optimal Media GmbH.

RCA intended to release a compilation LP (LSP 4762) that contained a mixture of both live and studio material from early 1972. Fans were made aware of this album when the news was advertised on the sleeve of the "American Trilogy" single in March. The first sign of trouble was when this single didn't perform very well and it was one of the main tracks on this proposed new LP.

NOTE: The title of this new album was also being considered for his new M.G.M documentary that was eventually called "Elvis On Tour".

RCA had recorded a small amount of selected songs from Elvis' Las Vegas engagement in February. In late March he went to Hollywood and recorded some new studio material that would compliment the live recordings.

Elvis then began a fifteen-city road tour in April, where the new documentary would gather most of it's content. He then went to New York to perform at its famous "Madison Square Garden" venue. These shows were a huge success and the artwork for "Standing Room Only" was re-purposed for the now urgently required June release of the "Recorded Live at Madison Square Garden" LP. This LP was supposed to be released in August.

Somehow, many of the great studio tracks recorded in March and intended for "Standing Room Only" inexplicably found themselves amongst older rehashed movie material on various low-budget RCA Camden LP's like "Separate Ways", "Elvis Sings Hits From His Movies" and "Burning Love".

Record one of this release is proof of what should have happened.
