RCA opened their first manufacturing Pressing Plant in the U.K.
RCA Limited, Record Division,
Armstrong Industrial Estate,
Washington, Co. Durham, England.

(May 7, 1970)

NOTE: 200 copies of a commerative album were pressed and presented to company employees and dignitaries that attended the opening. (RCA WT1)

RCA Washington pressings could be indentified by a 'W' etched into the vinyl's run out. Over half of RCA singles would still be pressed by CBS until March 1975.

Around July 1977, due to the increase in sales of cassette tapes and the declining sales of vinyl, RCA anounced that the 350 staff in Durham faced shorter hours and possibly plant closure. Ironically Elvis' Death in August saw a huge demand for his records and the plant was plunged into long 12 hour shifts, running 24/7. A year later there was still 300+ people employed at Durham. The writing though was on the wall, and it sadly closed in 1981.
